Who is Jou?

Totem Jou Publishing is a Baltimore‑based micro‑publisher built for Black, queer, and underrepresented readers and creators of adult fiction — spanning surreal fiction, epic fantasy, sci‑fi, film‑inspired narratives, anime/manga‑driven storytelling, and photography‑based or illustration‑led worlds with massive demand and chronically under‑served audiences. Our publishing scope supports traditional books and e‑books as well as the development of audiobooks, visual and illustrated editions, photo books, and companion music releases connected to narrative and multimedia projects.

We are creator‑first by design. That means the writers, artists, illustrators, photographers, audio collaborators, and composers who bring these stories to life keep their IP, their recognition, and the majority profit share. We handle the rest — from book production and digital formatting to early‑stage development of audio, illustration, photography, and music‑driven publishing pipelines.

The Modern Creative’s Trilemma

We’re in the midst of a massive publishing shift — but there’s a clear bottleneck. Reader demand exists across books, digital formats, audio, visual storytelling, and multimedia worlds, yet many creators still face a weak path from manuscript to market. The problem isn’t only demand. It’s the lack of a publishing option that combines professional support, fair incentives, and creator ownership — so creators are often pushed into one of three choices:

Traditional publishing promises credibility, access, and professional support. But the drawbacks typically involve high rejection rates, slow timelines, pressure to surrender IP control, and capped upside — ultimately, the creator loses here.

Self‑publishing guarantees full ownership and full control. The drawback, however, is that you become the entire publishing company — funding and managing editing, design, production, marketing, distribution, and ongoing promotion yourself. Burnout becomes inevitable long before your book, e‑book, or multimedia project reaches a reader. The creator loses here too.

Author Services offer paid support and professional help. Even so, their incentives are tied to selling you more services — not maximizing your long‑term book sales or the growth of your worldbuilding across formats. There’s no real stake in your success. The pattern is clear: the creator loses here as well.

The result is predictable — and creates a serious problem for creators whose niche audiences are actively searching for their work:

Great, timeless manuscripts stall as creators burn out. Meanwhile, visual storytellers, audio creators, photographers, and multimedia artists struggle to be acknowledged and paid respectfully for their art.

TJP Solves This MAJOR Problem

Totem Jou provides the credibility, access, and professional infrastructure creators deserve — without asking you to surrender your IP or accept capped upside. We handle the business and production side of publishing your manuscript with paid freelance professionals covering editing, design, illustration, formatting, and proofreading; print and e‑book distribution; marketing assets, public outreach, and project management; plus contest submissions and agent queries. In short, you get full professional support with none of the strings attached.

Our contracted team manages the entire production pipeline so you can stay focused on the work only you can do. Creator ownership, credit, and upside are protected through equitable pay and proper attribution — ensuring you keep what’s yours without having to run your own publishing company.

Taking the smallest slice of the pie through distribution rights, our incentives are tied entirely to your book’s performance, not upsells. TJP earns its share by helping your work reach its full potential in the market. Our model stays lean and scalable through per‑title staffing rather than heavy fixed payroll. There’s no pressure, no stacking costs, and no conflict of interest.

The result is predictable — but this time, the creative wins.

With our model, great manuscripts get produced as creators are published, recognized, and paid — putting incredible Baltimore art on the global stage.

Totem Jou is expanding into illustrated editions, manga‑inspired storytelling, and standalone photo/illustration books. We are working with early illustrators and visual creators to develop workflows for art direction, visual development, and preparation for both print and digital formats.

Music & Multimedia Publishing (In Development)

For creators producing multimedia or enhanced book projects, Totem Jou is developing support for companion music releases — including original scores, soundtracks, EPs, and albums — tied to narrative works, worldbuilding projects, or film/anime‑inspired storytelling. This includes production, mastering, and distribution of music connected to our published titles.

Why Totem Jou Expands Beyond Books

Today’s stories don’t live in a single format. A book becomes an e‑book. An e‑book becomes an audiobook. An illustrated edition deepens the world. A photo book expands the visual language. A soundtrack, EP, or album amplifies the emotional core. Anime/manga‑inspired narratives evolve into multimedia experiences.

Modern creators need a publisher who can support the full ecosystem of their storytelling — not just the manuscript.

That’s why Totem Jou begins with books and e‑books, and expands into:

  • Audiobooks
  • Illustrated editions & photo books
  • Anime/manga‑inspired visual storytelling
  • Film‑adjacent narrative formats
  • Companion music releases (soundtracks, EPs, albums)

These formats don’t replace the book—they amplify it, taking their work . They help creators reach readers, listeners, viewers, and fans across multiple mediums, strengthening the impact and longevity of their work.

Totem Jou exists to give creators the professional support they deserve across all the ways their stories can live — without asking them to surrender their IP, their recognition, or their upside.

Let’s build something extraordinary together.
